World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is held on February 2nd every year to celebrate the 1971 adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian City of Ramsar.  In New Zealand events are co-ordinated by the Fish and Game Council. Agencies and community groups are encouraged to organise local events.

The National Wetland Trust runs a national World Wetlands Day event every year.  The theme for 2010 is “Caring for Wetlands - an Answer to Climate Change”. Peat bogs are year-round carbon sinks, so this year the National Wetland Trust and Department of Conservation hosted a 'Peat Lake Combo' in the Waikato.

Over 75 people attended the afternoon session at Lake Serpentine on the 6th of February.  Read our report on the event.

Lake Serpentine near Hamilton is being considered for the site of the proposed National Wetland Centre.
